About The Ordinary

The Ordinary is the flagship brand of DECIEM, a beauty company founded in Toronto, Canada, in 2013 by the late Brandon Truaxe. During a co-op placement at a skincare lab, Truaxe became frustrated by what he saw as a lack of passion, transparency and insight in how beauty products were developed, and years later he set out to change it. The Ordinary launched in 2016.

DECIEM calls itself 'The Abnormal Beauty Company', and its definition of quality is about being authentic, functional and sensibly priced. The Ordinary puts that into practice by naming products after their key ingredients and concentrations, such as Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, so shoppers can see exactly what each formula is designed to do.

The Estée Lauder Companies first invested in DECIEM in 2017, became majority owner in 2021 and completed its acquisition in 2024. DECIEM remains headquartered in Toronto, home to its in-house labs, and is led by co-founder and CEO Nicola Kilner. Recent launches include the Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, Multi-Peptide Eye Serum and Soothing & Barrier Support Serum.

For shoppers, The Ordinary is ideal if you like to understand your skincare. Choose one or two actives for your main goals, introduce them one at a time, check the brand's guidance on which products not to layer together, and wear SPF when using acids or retinoids.
