SK-II

SK-II's story begins in the 1970s in Japan. Scientists noticed that elderly sake brewers had remarkably soft, smooth-looking hands, even though their faces showed their age. The brewers' hands were in daily contact with fermenting sake, so the researchers began studying the yeasts involved.

After examining more than 350 yeast strains, they identified one that produced a clear, nutrient-rich liquid they named PITERA. It's a fermentation-derived ingredient containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids and organic acids.

In 1980 the brand introduced its Facial Treatment Essence, containing over 90% PITERA, and in 1983 the brand took the name SK-II. The essence, a watery, lightweight lotion, has become one of the best-known products in Japanese skincare and the centre of the SK-II range.

For shoppers, the essence is used after cleansing and before serums or moisturiser. Pour a little into your palms and press gently into the face and neck, or apply with a cotton pad. Use morning and night, and follow with your usual moisturiser and sunscreen in the morning. A little goes a long way, and it layers well with almost any routine. Many fans like to pair it with a simple routine so the essence can take centre stage. Because the formula is fragrance-free and watery, it suits most skin types, including oily and combination skin.
