Bioderma is the dermatological skincare brand of NAOS, the French company founded in 1977 by pharmacist-biologist Jean-Noël Thorel. In 1995 Bioderma created Sensibio H2O, the first micellar water: a no-rinse cleanser and makeup remover made for sensitive skin that went on to start a whole new category.

About Bioderma

Bioderma was founded by NAOS, a French skincare company started in 1977 by Jean-Noël Thorel, a pharmacist-biologist.

NAOS calls its approach Ecobiology: treating the skin as a living ecosystem and working with its biology rather than against it. Its research and design are based at NAOS Les Laboratoires in Aix-en-Provence, France.

In 1995 Bioderma invented micellar water technology with Sensibio H2O. It replaced the usual cleansing milk and toner duo with a single no-rinse step and is now used around the world. In 2018 the founder donated all his shares to the Jean-Noël Thorel Foundation.
